So…spoiler alert in the title there. Last year just after turning 26 I wrote a list of 26 things to do while I was 26 – these were blog, personal, and other random things that I wanted to acheive during my upcoming year. And today, since I turn 27 tomorrow, I wanted to take a look back at this list and see what I’d actually managed to get done.
Here’s the original list of goals if you want to check them out and refresh yourself, so you can see really how badly I did. I set myself ten blog related goals and I actually learnt something very interesting from trying to achieve one of them in particular. I wanted to start working with brands on more collaborations, and I definitely managed to make that happen. I’ve worked with some lovely brands and small companies over the past year and had some amazing products to show you guys, but I’ve also had times when I’ve been so disappointed in something gifted to me in exhange for review that I’ve been unable to write a post at all.
One in particular spings to mind where I was asked to review an upcoming book for someone and I couldn’t even finish reading the book, nevermind write the review. This was really more due to my personal feelings about some of the content, but, because I couldn’t subject myself to that content I was unable to write the post I promised and it got me thinking. In the interest of keeping TSG impartial, honest and within my personal/moral/emotional remit, I’m not sure I want to work with any brands again. It can really inhibit your integrity as a writer to feel pressured into saying something good just because the product was free or the post is paid. So for the time being at least, I won’t be working with anymore brands for free stuff or payment, and everything you have or will see on my blog will be bought and paid for with my own hard-earned money.
I also didn’t finish my media kit, find all that many cruelty free beauty brands to buy from, or plan a giveaway for my second Blogiversary, but I did achieve 7 out of 10 of my blogging goals, so I’m more than happy with that.
My personal goals also went pretty well – I visited Edinburgh, Lewis & Harris, I started saving a little money (although this is for a new sofa which I’ll be ordering very soon), and I have started eating slightly healthier, although my diet is still not great. We also finished all the flooring in the Gypsy Van which is a huge achievement in itself and has taken a great deal of time and money, so I’m thrilled with that. My reading list has grown if anything, but I have started finding more time to read just before going to sleep at night, so I’ve made a good dent in that goal too! That makes 6 out of ten personal goals that I’ve at least made a start on, and I’ve got plans for seeing my friends more over the next few months, as well as hopefully planning a trip to Dundee to visit my brother some time in the New Year, so that’s not a total loss.
And finally there were my other random goals, let’s see how I did there –
I did not achieve anything on the last section of my list. I never once listed three good things that had happened in one day, nor did I say yes to anymore things than I would normally. I didn’t get sick really over the last year, but I did find myself Googling what allergies I could have and so on, and I’ve been more wound up and over-thinky about some things than I ever have been before so that was all a total write off. There’s still thousands of photos stuffed into shoe boxes that I never even touched, I didn’t even get any albums to put them in so that tells you how serious I was about that one! And the only home remedy I’ve tried in the last year was to mix two different brands of shampoo because there wasn’t enough of either of them for one hairwash.
So there you have it guys, I’m leaving my 26th year on this planet on a slightly less than 50% achievement points, but to be honest, I’m not all that fussed that I wasn’t able to get everything checked off my list. I’ve made some good starts and learnt some very important lessons, so I really think this year has been really quite succesful for me and I’m super excited to see what 27 brings for me!
