Most people who want to visit Scotland will have heard about and seen the images of the white sand beaches and crystal blue waters of the isles of Lewis and Harris. It’s been top of my travel bucket list for quite some time now, and despite living on Skye for 7 years nearly, it was only this weekend past that I got to see it for the first time.

For Dan’s birthday I decided to surprise him with a camping trip to Harris, and we set off for the ferry on the Friday. There wasn’t a lot we specifically wanted to do or see, just to get away for a weekend and see somewhere new! It was also perfectly timed as on the Sunday it was the one year anniversary of our first date so it was a doubly special occasion for us both.

Here’s a gallery of our trip with some of the many, many photos I took both with my phone and camera. It was an amazing trip and I’ll definitely go back at some point, and I hope you guys enjoy this gallery of our trip from the ferry ride out there (during which a lifeboat was deployed!) through all the amazing views and beaches! We were so lucky with the weather, with it being hot and sunny during the day and clear but deathly cold at night. I’m so glad I packed a super cosy throw for the tent as it made all the difference!

During the ferry ride out there, 2 of the crew deployed a lifeboat from the ferry and we watched them conducting drills for quite some time.

The view from the inside of our tent! We camped right in amongst sand dunes just feet from the beach.
St Clement’s Church is disused now, although Historic Scotland clearly look after it beautifully and it’s such a peaceful little corner of Harris.

The gorgeous Luskentyre beach was just a few miles from where we camped, and made for some stunning views when you came over the hill and caught sight of it from the road.

Our little home away from home. Camping is not natural to me, so I like to take a few home comforts like our own duvet and pillows as well as warm throws.

If anyone has ever thought about going to the Outer Hebrides, I strongly recommend you do it! I really wish I hadn’t waited so long before going and now I’ve been once, I want to go back and explore other islands and see what else there is to be seen. Harris was an amazing weekend and such a perfect way to celebrate both Dan’s birthday and our anniversary. And I know I say it so much, but I really do think I’m so lucky to live where I do and to have all that I do on my doorstep!
